On Aug. 28^th,  RCMP arrested six people at a property on the 300-block of 7th Avenue South in Swan River as part of an ongoing drug trafficking investigation.

The RCMP’s Swan River General Investigation Section (GIS) executed multiple search warrants – first at the residence, then at outbuildings and vehicles associated with the property. GIS officers were assisted by Swan River RCMP, the RCMP West District Crime Reduction Enforcement Support Team, the RCMP West District GIS and Police Dog Services.

Six people were arrested at the scene without incident.

Carla Slepicka, 49, of Swan River is charged with:

• Drug trafficking; and

• Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.

Wayne Cook, 45, of Sapotaweyak Cree Nation is charged with drug possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Michael Matsakoff of Swan River  is charged with drug trafficking and possession of property obtained by crime.

Lawrence Severight, 56, of Cote First Nation in Saskatchewan is charged with multiple offenses including drug possession.

Two people – Dustin McDuff, 45, of Swan River and 22-year-old Kaylee Keefe of Kenville are both charged with drug possession for the purpose of trafficking.

The investigation continues

Flin Flon is getting ready for a Municipal Election on October the 28^th and Community Futures Greenstone,  and the Flin Flon Chamber of Commerce want to make sure you know what to expect.

They will be hosting two Pre Election Information sessions that will include a lot of information on how the whole election process works. General Manager Becky Cianflone has more. " So we are offering two different opportunities, one is virtual by Zoom taking place tonight between 7 and 8pm. The second session  is in person and at Flin Flon City Hall on Thursday starting at 6:30pm."

The In person session will include presentations from Tiffany Anderson from the RM of Kelsey and former Flin Flon Mayor Cal Huntley.

The NRHA are calling on Mothers, Fathers, Brothers, Sisters, Friends, Cousins, Aunts, Uncles, Grand Parents, Sons, Daughters, Nieces and Nephews to come out and recognize International Overdose Awareness Day.

The event has been rescheduled for tomorrow and the NRHA’S Christa McIntire explains the history behind the event and what will be taking place in Flin Flon. 

"So International  Overdose Awareness Day is an annual campaign held across the World on August the 31st. The purpose is to hopefully end drug overdoses and also to remember those that have died and acknowledge the grief of family and friends. We invite everyone to come out to our event and we are going to have free food, entertainment, Naloxone training and we will also have information sharing."

It takes place at Pioneer Square between noon and 1:30 pm and is being held in conjunction with the Play It Safer Network and Manitoba Harm Reduction Network.

On August 28th, at approximately 3pm., Shamattawa RCMP were called to an assault at the Northern Store in the community.

Officers immediately responded to the scene where they located a seriously injured male suffering from what appeared to be a serious stab wound.

The initial investigation determined the male suspect, who was known to the victim, was still on the scene and was arrested without incident.

The 36-year-old victim was transported to the local nursing station where he succumbed to his injuries.

Manitoba RCMP Major Crime Services (MCS) deployed to the community and took charge  of the investigation.

Rodney Beardy, 58, from Shamattawa has been charged with second-degree murder in relation to the male’s death and remains in custody.

Manitoba RCMP MSC, Forensic Identification Services continue to investigate.

The City of Flin Flon is currently accepting letters of application from anybody  who may be  interested in serving as a volunteer member of the Flin Flon Station Museum Board of Directors.

Hapnot Collegiate will be holding their Grade 9 New Student Orientation this Thursday September the 3^rd from 1:30 pm to 2:30pm.

The orientation will take place in the Hapnot Theatre with Ms Link.

Mme Milligan will also be available at the school for any French Immersion questions.

Manitoba First Nations Police and RCMP have seized more than ten-thousand dollars in cash and several firearms following search warrants in Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation.

The warrants were executed August tenth as part of an ongoing drug trafficking investigation.

Police searched two residences on Townsite. Several people were detained and arrested during the first search.

At the second residence, officers seized ten-thousand, 260 dollars in Canadian currency, along with several rifles and shotguns, pellet and BB guns, ammunition and other weapons.

The investigation is ongoing, and police say additional charges may be laid as evidence is reviewed.

AT THEIR MEETING EARLIER THIS WEEK THE TOWN COUNCIL OF CREIGHTON ACCEPTED THE INVITATION TO SUPPORT THE UPCOMING PAR 3 HOLE IN ONE TOURNAMENT AT THE PHANTOM LAKE GOLF COURSE AT A COST OF $200 DOLLARS.

COUNCIL ALSO AGREED TO SUPPORT THE CFAR SNACKS FOR STUDENTS PROMOTION AT A COST OF $277 DOLLARS THAT WILL HELP WITH DONATIONS TO THE BREAKFAST AND LUNCH PROGRAMS FOR CREIGHTON COMMUNITY SCHOOL.

COUNCIL REPORTED RECEIVING CONFIRMATION FROM THE CANADA COMMUNITY BUILDING FUND FOR APPROVAL OF THE OVAL OF DREAMS WALKING TRACK PAVEMENT REPLACEMENT IN THE AMOUNT OF $137,716.18. THEY ALSO REPORTED BEING APPROVED FOR THE LIGHTING REPLACEMENT AT THE SPORTEX IN THE AMOUNT OF $72,702.10.

COUNCIL AGREED TO PASS A MOTION TO ACCEPT THE PROPOSAL FROM DANJAY KRYSCHUK TO RENT THE SPORTEX CONCESSION FOR THE 2026/27 ARENA SEASON.

This Monday an event that is taking place all over the world will be observed in our community. International Overdose Awareness Day is being held in more than 40 countries worldwide.  This is its 25^th year. Its purpose is to take action and remember without stigma the lives lost or permanently injured by drug overdose. A local event is planned as we get more from the Play it Safer Network’s Madison McIntyre.

“So, on Monday, August 31^st, the Play it Safer Network is hosting an event from 12 to 1:30 at Pioneer Square. It’s a free event, everyone’s welcome to attend, and there will be food, entertainment, information, naloxone training and we encourage everyone to attend.”

This past Saturday Night Sandy Bay RCMP officers heard loud banging coming from outside their detachment.

In the parking lot officers observed a male smashing the windows of a police vehicle with a metal bar. Police officers arrested the male on scene without incident.

Further police investigation determined the male was involved in a separate incident in Sandy Bay earlier that evening, during which the windows of another vehicle were damaged.

The male was also wanted on a Flin Flon warrant for failing to appear in court. As a result of police investigation, 35-year-old Manny Bear, from Sandy Bay, has been charged with:

• Two counts of mischief
• two counts, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose three counts, breach of probation,

Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation has become Saskatchewan’s only independent agreement holder under the federal Indigenous Skills and Employment Training Program, or ISET.

The agreement provides PBCN with direct responsibility for delivering employment and training services to its eight communities across Treaty 6 and Treaty 10 territories in northeastern Saskatchewan.

The federal government is providing $6.8 million for the agreement through the existing ISET funding envelope.

PBCN said the agreement follows nearly a decade of work involving community leadership, Elders, Service Canada, federal partners and consultants.

The agreement also enables PBCN to strengthen partnerships with employers, training institutions and governments while expanding access to employment and training opportunities for its citizens.

Ham Sandwich has a busy year of ahead themselves. Our area’s all local theatre group held their annual general meeting this past Sunday and were able to announce their upcoming fall production.

Dracula will be coming to the RH Channing Auditorium in November with auditions to be announced shortly. It’s the classic story that debuted on Broadway originally in 1927. Susan Gunn Saray will direct.

Other information coming from the AGM was that both shows from last season Sinners and Boston Marriage made a profit. Leslie Fernandez will serve once again as President with Wendy Couet as the new Vice President Ham Sandwich would also like to thank the United Steel workers for their added support.

In addition to fall play, Ham Sandwich is gearing up for workshops for culture days and children’s show in the spring of 2027.

A woman is in police custody in connection with last week’s homicide in the northern Saskatchewan community of Sandy Bay.

RCMP confirm Chasity Charolette Rose Clarke, 23, was arrested on Aug. 21 in Pelican Narrows. She was wanted for manslaughter in connection with the death of 19-year-old Silvino Grenier.

According to police, Grenier was found dead on Aug. 16 after an altercation broke out between a group of people at a home in Sandy Bay early that morning.

A warrant for Clarke’s arrest was issued shortly after. Made her first appearance in Prince Albert provincial court Monday

A group promoting archaeology in Saskatchewan will be making their way to The Northern Gateway Museum in Denare Beach this upcoming weekend. An organization from Saskatoon the Archeo Caravan will be hosting the final family event of the year at the museum. We find out more from archeologist Bailey Pelletier.

“So, our Archeo Caravan is part of our outreach programming that we, the Saskatchewan Archeological Society, do throughout the summertime. Where we go to different towns and communities to educate everyone on Saskatchewan Archeology through fun activities, such as; rock art painting, getting to hunt a bison target by throwing atlatls...many other hands on activities such as our ceramics that are broken apart and you get to piece back together and many other activities.”

The event includes a demonstration on how to make and use stone tools, and accessing authentic archeological materials. So that will all take place at the museum this Friday and Saturday from 11-3 and  The Northern Gateway Museum will have its last day of the season this upcoming Sunday from 11-7.

THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES MET FOR THE FIRST TIME TUESDAY EVENING AHEAD OF THE UPCOMING SCHOOL YEAR. A MOTION WAS PASSED TO SIGN THE ENGAGEMENT LETTER WITH BAKER TILLY FOR THE 2025/26 AUDIT.

THEY ALSO APPROVED THE TRANSFER OF CAPITAL FUNDS FROM THE FINANCIAL SOFTWARE RESERVE TO THE PLAYGROUND RESERVE UP TO A MAXIMUM OF $100,000 DOLLARS.

A MOTION WAS PASSED TO APPROVE AND SIGN THE PROMISSORY NOTE AND SECURITY AGREEMENT WITH THE PROVINCE OF MANITOBA EDUCATION EARLY CHILDHOOD LEARNING.

 WORK CONTINUES AT HAPNOT ON A NEW RAMP ENTRY AS WELL AS A LIFT TO THE MAIN FLOOR FROM THE FRONT DOORS. AT ECOLE McISSAC WORK CONTINUES ON A SENSORY ROOM WHERE THE FAMILY ROOM WAS LOCATED, THE FAMILY ROOM IS NOW LOCATED IN THE ANNEX.

THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS FOR ALL STUDENTS IS SEPTEMBER 9th.

Caring for Our Community is a group of citizen’s from Flin Flon, Creighton and Denare Beach who are concerned about the current crime situation in Flin Flon and the surrounding area.

They held another meeting at Council Chambers last night and one of the people who is helping organize things, Ben McCutcheon explains what this group is looking to accomplish. “We want to find solutions and not per se just finger pointing. We want proactive, meaningful solutions. So, we’re just starting out and so the other day we had a meeting with Allison Dallas-Funk and Mike Slipp and that was with me and Karen. We talked about a few things, like changing the wording of the MOU that we have going on, that would open up some funding and grant streaming.”

They meet with members of City Council regularly and had a chance recently to meet with members from the Canadian Centre for Safer Communities.

Caring For Our Community meet the first and fourth Monday of the month at Council Chambers starting at 7pm, these meetings are open to any members of the public who would like to come out and share ideas, make suggestions or just listen.

It was a ground breaking day for UCN in Flin Flon yesterday as they celebrated the grand opening of the new Student Housing facility, at the Northern Manitoba Mining Community.

Jamie Grant who is the Associate Vice President calls it a huge milestone for Flin Flon and the North. “It’s been a long time coming, but we’re finally here, and really what this is now allowing us to do at UCN it’s we’re actually able to expand our programming. We’ve got some new programs already rolled up for this fall, surveyor assistance, something that we’ve never offered here in Flin Flon starting mid September. And students actually staying in residence, we’ve got mining programs, we’ve got nursing, we’ve got geological programs being planned for the future. So, this is just the beginning of what’s to come for programming for Flin Flon. So, stay tuned there’s going to be some pretty exciting stuff.”

There are 30 individual rooms, 8 Executive Suites, a Recreational Centre with gym equipment and a pool table and a full functioning Dining Hall.

Students will start to arrive on September the 7^th from all over including Saskatchewan, Southern Manitoba and First Nation Communities right across the North. You can apply for student housing by going to ucn.ca and filling out the intake form under Flin Flon Student Residence.

On August 19^th, Flin Flon RCMP received a report of pizza delivery driver that was robbed by an unknown male on Hill Street.

Officers responded to the area and learned a male suspect had attempted to grab the pizza box from the 53-year-old male victim. After a brief struggle, the victim was able to get the pizza back, deliver the food, and flee uninjured to his vehicle.

A description of the suspect was given and patrols were conducted, but the suspect was not located.

While officers were speaking with a separate witness, they were dispatched to a call about a male following a group of kids, yelling and holding a bottle of alcohol that matched the description of the suspect.

When they arrived on scene, the suspect was located and arrested without incident.

Bradley Pijenburg, 22, from Flin Flon is facing multiple charges including robbery and uttering threats.

Flin Flon RCMP continue to investigate.
